Bonaire Kite Week - An Official IKA Event
For the first time ever Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean will be hosting the opening leg of the South & Central American Championship Tour 2013. Flat water, little waves, some current makes it one of the best places in the world for kite boarding. With a fringing reef, racers enjoy deep water within 10 feet of the shore line.
Bonaire Kite Week is fully IKA and ISAF sanctioned and as such a ISAF Course Racing 100 Point World Ranking Event.
Excitement in the kitesurfing world is building for the upcoming IKA/ISAF sanctioned South and Middle American Course Racing Championships to be held on Bonaire, 11-16 June 2013. With the event just a few weeks away, event organizers are thrilled to announce that several of the top-ranked course racers in the world are registered for this first-ever Caribbean championship course racing event.
More than 40 competitors from around the world are already registered. Florian Gruber (GER), currently ranked number one in the world, is registered and will be a contender for the top spot. Gruber has enjoyed a strong race season so far, and will arrive on Bonaire ready to defend his number one ranking.
Challenging him will be Riccardo Leccese (ITA), currently ranked number two in the world. Leccese, finishing second overall in the 2012 race season, is a serious challenge to Gruber's number one ranking, and competition is expected to be fierce between these two rivals.
Two of the 2012 top ranked female riders are also attending. Nuria Goma (ESP) is coming to Bonaire ready to retain her top 5 status in the women's field. Challenging her will be last year's number 7 ranked rider, Ariane Imbert (FRA). Both women enjoyed a successful season in 2012, and are ready to move up even further in the rankings during the Caribbean event.
The Bonaire Kitesurf Foundation (BKF) is organizing this exciting course racing event. The BKF is a non-profit organization founded to support the growth of kitesurfing (also known as kiteboarding) on Bonaire. The primary focus of the BKF is to grow tourism on the island of Bonaire via introduction of a new source of tourism traffic to the island.
